Wow, it's been about 2 years. I've attempted twice to get my garden cleaned up and started between then and today, with no success. I'd get it cleaned up, but couldn't afford to get the stuff to make new beds. Then it would get taken over by weeds, vicious cycle!
Finally I pulled all of the old stuff completely out. No more trying to grow in beds that had weed seeds constantly hiding in them and waiting to ruin my garden.
Sooooo........
Here are a few pics.

It's just two boxes - easily manageable. And there will be a few containers with tomatoes. I'm going to try bush tomatoes- i've always done vine because of space in the boxes.
So far I have little sprouts shooting up for:
Cukes
Watermelon (crimson sweet & sugar baby)
Raven Squash
Peas (sugar snap, lots of them! i like to just stand out there, pluck them off their vines and eat them. Not many make it into the house for use!)
Spinach
Ithica Lettuce
Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce
Radishes (don't eat 'em, but they grow fast so I like to have them in there, it feels like success!!)
Carrots (Red)
Onion (bunching)
Brussel Sprouts (a sprout of brussel sprouts?)
And some herbs & flowers that I put in for companion planting:
borage
marjoram
dill
holy basil
genovese basil
nasturtium

Those are just the things that have shown themselves so far.

Hopefully I can keep up better with the garden, and the blog! I'm looking forward to a successful garden this year :)Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-50792792446021431522011-06-13T17:01:00.000-07:002011-06-13T17:01:16.091-07:00Shame on me!I can't believe how long its been again since I've blogged. The garden - it's over for the summer here. Everything wilts and dies this time of year since its so hot. I had a pretty good haul this season though.
Lettuce - lots!
Corn - no. it didn't get its ears before the heat took over. that was too bad.
squash - yep! mostly zucchini.
one little tomato - maybe another before the heat gets it all
broccoli - yes!
peas - unbelievable - i had tons of peas. i love just eating them right there in the garden, many didn't even make it into the house and maybe only one batch got cooked. i'm doubling up next year because i can't get enough of them.

But i do think i'm going to shrink the garden again for next year. 6 boxes is still too much for me to keep up with. i need to keep it small so i can keep up with the weeding and taking care of things. too much stuff and i get overwhelmed and don't do it at all.

now i have to go catch up on how everyone is doing. i'm 2 weeks out from another competition so that's where my focus has been for the past 3 months.Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-71106955660556818252011-02-23T11:03:00.000-08:002011-02-23T11:03:27.052-08:00Corn!The corn is coming up! Today I was out spraying it with BT because I am NOT going to have cutworms eat it all this year.
We had a few surprise cold days come up and I lost the watermelon, squash and spinach, but no worries because I started some more today.
So, short blog, but here are a few pics of what's coming up in the garden!
We might as well set the rain predictions by when I plan on planting seeds in the garden. And we have big, fat, heavy raindrops here which means my little seeds (like lettuce and herbs) will be washed all over the box and who knows what will sprout where!
Today I accomplished quite a bit in the garden. I started the 3 sisters box today. I planted the corn in a spiral pattern and was able to fit 88 into the box. I read that in a spiral in small gardens they have a better chance at pollinating. I'll take any better chances I can get. That may be too many, but I plan on fertilizing aggressively this year (i have lots of bunny poo), and it can't be worse than any of the other years that my corn didn't come in. I put in two small trellis' to help prop up the pole beans. I don't want them strangling the corn completely :) . Then along the edges of the box I added some squash - 3 bon bon squash (already started in containers), 2 raven squash, and I have 3 dixie squash in the containers about to sprout that I'll put out in a week or two. I'm just going to let them roam all along the pathways and in between the boxes. I don't really care for growing the squash up the nets.

I managed to identify some of the plants coming up in the container squares. The Bon Bon squash was kind enough to spit a seed casing out with it's leaves so I was able to match that up with the ones from the package. The Dixie squash seeds are turquoise so all I had to do was dig down a little bit and look at those. The tomatoes were easy, the watermelon was easy - except for the fact that I started two kinds and they both look the same right now (sugar baby and crimson sweet). The brussel sprouts are coming up and those were only easy to identify because I planted 9 squares of them. Today I planted some romaine into the containers because I didn't notice it coming up outside. And I'm not sure what it looks like when it starts. I may have pulled it out as a weed. Once it comes up in the containers I'll know if I saw it out there. I don't really use the containers to grow things for 4-6 weeks before going out. I just use them to get things started so I know they aren't a weed out there LOL. I did pull tons of more little weeds out in the boxes today. Will they ever stop coming up???

Last week I spent my energy working on the front yard. I think I can handle these five. The one surrounded by block and covered in weeds isn't a working garden bed. I think I'm going to dig it up and line it and make it a little pond. It was "standing" straight up and down, as if its bottom half were growing out of the ground. Its legs were up at its head around the eyes. There seemed to be wings folded along its back. I brought out dh to look at it and he said its probably laying eggs all over my garden and the offspring will devour the whole thing. So I squished it, and pulled all the surrounding dirt out - no chances! When I picked it up I found that it's bottom half - very wormy/caterpillary like - was inside an old stalk of some small plant. I mean small like an old flower stem or even the stem of some cilantro or other herb. Sorry about the fuzzy pics but these were the best that would come out. And then of course it was squished/squashed and there were no more photo opportunities.
I just throw them into the garden and let them do their thing. However, I found these 2 trays that I purchased marigolds in last year for the front yard. It has 18 cups in each one and I thought - why not? After all, this way I'll know it's the plant growing and not weeds. And who knows how many plants I have pulled from the garden thinking they are weeds?
So in went the soil. And out came the seed packets. And I'm saying to myself "I'll remember" what I planted long enough to grab some paper after I plant them and write it down. Poke the hole, drop in the seed, cover it up.... rinse & repeat 35 more times. Run out and get the paper and pen.... what did i plant? I have the seed packets right here, but where did I put what?
Scrape aside the dirt, look at the seeds.
What is THIS one? I planted several types of watermelon - which one is this? I planted 9 squares of brussel sprouts, which 9?
I finally put together some semblance of a chart. I at least knew which seeds were in which container, just didn't know which square each one was in. Well, that's okay, knowing which container they're in is good enough once they sprout.
But then....
I figure the containers will leak a bit so I'd better put them on something. I found a large lid to a plastic bin, picked them up and set them on it, and didn't pay the slightest attention to which tray I put on first or anything!
LOL, so I have mystery containers for now.

So far I've seen peas, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, radishes, onions & lettuce. Some of the stuff hasn't sprouted yet, but I think it will eventually.
Today I prepared the last two beds for my February stuff. One of them will be a 3 sisters garden, mostly corn. I really want corn this year. REALLY.
The herb bed - which still needs a cleanup - reseeded itself with cilantro and dill. The bunny was thrilled. He's been turning his nose up at the store bought cilantro. He ripped the fresh stuff right out of my hands LOL.
I weeded the other beds, filled the last two, turned the compost a bit, checked on the worms that we forgot about for over a year. Seriously, the bushes grew up around the worm bin and we just totally forgot. There were still worms in there and yes they were alive. I put in some new bedding and food for them.
We've had rain off and on so I haven't had to water in a while, which is nice. There are more weeds that I hoped for, but I just keep pulling them. Right now its a bit hard since i planted some spices randomly and I'm not sure what's a weed and what isn't. So some of them are being left alone until I'm sure.
That's about all. It's nice seeing things grow again and being out there working in the yard!Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-91571691901506086912011-01-02T18:39:00.000-08:002011-01-02T18:39:12.451-08:00Starting the New Year with the garden.I'm a bad blogger. I admit it! But at least some work is happening in the garden. And if I have to choose between getting that done or writing about it, well getting it done produces better results :) .
However, I have a moment here so a little recap:
I trimmed the garden back to 5 beds. I had five the first year I started and it was manageable. I expanded to 10 and it was just too much. Too many pests, too many weeds, too many headaches trying to get everything planted. I feel that I can keep up with the 5 beds and am looking forward to a productive season.
I planted 3 beds on New Years Eve day. Carrots, peppers, watermelon, 4 different lettuce, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, onions, tomatoes & some herbs.
I have one prepped for February, and one more that I'm currently cleaning up and getting ready to prep for corn in February. My corn has never grown well and it is the one crop that I was really excited about. I am going to be extra vigilant this year against those cutworms.
Oh, and I guess its really 6 beds. I always forget about the herb box at the back door. I think that is still manageable. Honestly the herbs pretty much take care of themselves. I still need to add some more compost to that one too and get it ready.
I didn't get any gardening done after I cleaned up the beds last fall. And all of the weeds grew back until I basically plowed the one box under. After that one stayed clean I churned them all up and it seems to really have helped the weed issue. No more horse manure!
I also want to be better about keeping the nutrients in. All of this info on blood meal and fish emulsion and bone meal - its enough to make my head spin. But I think if I just read a little bit a day instead of trying to take it all in at once I can manage.
So that's about it. I'm in off season for my figure shows so I have a bit more time to put into the garden. I did walk away with a trophy last season so that was awesome! I'm looking at doing 3 shows this summer/fall so good thing the garden is pretty much dead in the summer.
Sorry to be gone so long, and I'm hoping to keep up a bit better this year. I need to be more productive and organized so that's what I'm working on.Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-19223581692831118842010-08-19T11:35:00.000-07:002010-08-19T11:35:27.457-07:00WEEDS - almost gone!Alrighty, I am ALMOST done with the weeding project. All of the garden beds in the main garden are DONE. Yay! Still have some work to do on the paths and in the flower bed next to them, but this is good progress. And I also have the herb garden at the back door to finish. But I'm excited that I can start some planting probably this weekend.
Here are some progress pics:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Now that is MUCH better. :) I left in some ground cover that I like back there. And I didn't mess with the stuff on the fence...yet. Ok, gotta head out, but I'm happy with how it is coming along!

Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-37184968598202522732010-08-15T19:19:00.000-07:002010-08-15T19:19:06.028-07:00Almost Done Weeding!I've only 2 boxes to go. Honestly I could have finished them this week. I just got incredibly lazy. Every time I would look out there it seemed overwhelming and I wouldn't even go out. Which means weeds had grown back in the other beds I had already done. I am REALLY regretting the horse manure. Yes, it was great to make everything grow, but the weeds it brought in are insane. Next year I may have to totally empty these boxes and redo my mel's mix. But there is no money for that this year.
Today I did 3 beds. There's only the herb box at the back door, and the old strawberry box left. And some weeds that are around the boxes, but my main concern is to get those boxes ready to plant. It isn't necessarily pretty out there right now, but it is functional!
So I did NOT meet my goal of getting them done by the 15th. However I am close and will finish them up this week. Besides, its extra calories burned, right? :)
I'm not going to be planting all the boxes right away, I'm wondering if I should cover them with plastic to try to reduce all of the weed problems. And there are tons of these diamond shape bugs in everything. Will try to get a pic. They remind me of some sort of squash bug relation, but not quite.
Sorry to be so absent. I'm 4 weeks out of my show and my mind is on workouts & diet constantly.
Have a great evening! (ok, it's 10pm and evening is over...)Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-66457209138427782712010-08-07T16:36:00.000-07:002010-08-07T16:36:34.542-07:00Heading out to weed!Ok, I'm heading out RIGHT NOW to weed another box. I've got 6 done, and only 4 to go. I think I'll make my goal!! :) Alright, there's still the pathways in between and stuff, but I'm happy with the progress.
On another note, if I'm scarce again for the next few weeks don't worry. I have a figure competition coming up in 5 weeks and it is taking over the majority of my time. I still plan to have the garden up and running mid month though.
Will take a pic of the garden and update tonight if it isn't too dark.Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-13433078904526747742010-08-03T16:19:00.000-07:002010-08-03T16:19:42.300-07:00Progress PicOn my way! And I left the legitimate ground cover that I planted right there by the wheelbarrow. Right now its raining so I am not getting out in the garden today. Still, it's 8/3 and I'm halfway there so I'm really happy about that progress.
Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-17078540642750662822010-08-02T20:13:00.000-07:002010-08-02T20:13:09.546-07:00Dead BatteriesI need to replace the batteries in the camera so I can get a pic of my progress. I've got 5 boxes cleared so far. Yay! In FL this time of year it is hard to find a good time to be out in the garden pulling weeds. It is either ridiculously hot, or the mosquitoes are out. Of course, when I'm planting seeds it isn't ridiculously hot. Just when doing undesireable tasks, haha!
When clearing Jake's box I found some carrots growing in there so I left those behind. That way there's something that actually belongs there :)
I'm happy to see there are worms still in the boxes. But lots and lots of other bugs which I'll get a pic of.
Oh, and a pretty black wooly caterpillar was inching his way along one of the boxes. I did get a pic of that, but...dead batteries.
Ok, that's my catching up post. I'm trying to be better about blogging, but there's so much going on. BUSY!Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-28838722872419999752010-07-29T16:12:00.000-07:002010-07-29T16:12:46.066-07:00Cleaning Up Day 1 & 2 - Shortest blog of mine ever!!10 minutes yesterday weeding, and 10 minutes today. Well here is something really scary. A garden that has been neglected for several months. There's nothing to do in the garden from June - August. I haven't even looked back there in weeks. Today I went out to get a tan and WHOA - reality hit! Ok, the grass in the yard is really long too but that's because the mower broke right before we went on vacation and we just got a new one. Will have to get the kiddo to mow that later tonight.
Anyhow, why would I post such a horrible pic of my garden? For the same reason I post "before" pictures when I do a fitness challenge .... Accountability. If I put it out there and say I'm going to do something about it I am more likely to actually do it. I can start planting in mid August so that is my goal. I plan to have the garden looking neat and ready by August 15th. Watch for nice neat garden pics mid-August. :)
Here are the ugly ones!
The main garden:

There, an extra large pic so you can see just how bad it really is!! There are 10 boxes hiding in there LOL. And a crazy wheelbarrow we keep forgetting to put away. I bet the legs are ready to rot off that sucker. Oh wait, they aren't wood. Well I bet the handles are ready to rot off then.

The herb box:

I promise that there are actually herbs somewhere in there...

Alright, there they are in all their glory. The messiest garden pics around. I'm going to start weeding today. Wish me luck. I hope I don't get lost out there....Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-8724838284719058192010-05-17T14:37:00.000-07:002010-05-17T14:44:15.504-07:00Sorry, I'm Still Going (& Growing!)Ugh, so sorry I haven't been here. I just saw a comment from Granny checking on me. Thanks Granny for caring!!

I am a bad multitasker LOL. If I'm doing one thing I tend to neglect another. I have been getting in shape for summer and my mind has been on workouts and fitness. I've started up my jewelry making again and that is taking up my time as well. I also work part time for a personal trainer and do her customer service and website stuff, plus put her blog up around in different places. By the time I'm done with that and with blogging my fitness stuff I'm just worn out from blogging LOL.

My garden is still going, even though we're moving into the stage of "too hot and everything wilts and dies". I've harvested a ton of peas and lettuce, purple pole beans and herbs. The watermelon in Jake's bed is surviving. We need to water it way more for sure. There's definitely weeding to do, but for the most part it is going well for this time of year. I think I will get out the curtains again this year to try to have peppers throughout the summer. That worked great last year. I'm skipping squash at this point because I've had it with squash bugs, they drove me nuts last time around.

Anyhow, I'm still alive!!! :) I will try to be better about checking in because I know I worry about people when I don't see them posting and wonder if I'll ever know what has become of them. And I need to get better about checking in on you all too!!!Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-49669183599350116122010-02-08T12:26:00.000-08:002010-02-08T12:54:29.986-08:00What's up?Just a quickie post here :)
What's up in the garden?
Broccoli - this is from seed I har\/ested from one of my plants last season - lots of it coming up "" Will ha\/e to thin these and plant them in other places.
Spinach showing its little sprouts
Pole bean peaking through the dirt
Radishes - i don't eat these but they always grow and I need that satisfaction of seeing something grow in the garden LOL
Green Arrow Peas poking up
Sugar Snap peas - yep, coming through
And early girl tomatoes
Looks like a bush bean or two coming up
Maybe, possibly, finally the black seeded simpson lettuce I ha\/e planted for 2 years that ne\/er comes up LOL
We'\/e had rain e\/ery other day and sunshine in between, and cool weather but no freezes. It's looking pretty good so far this season :)

Anyhow, that's all for now. Excuse my crazy typing but my 1 key that has the exclamation point with it is not working, nor is my letter between "c" and "b" so I'm using these slashes to make capital \/'s LOL.
Ha\/e a super dayCrystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-52329950521823960592010-01-29T15:41:00.001-08:002010-01-29T15:50:14.714-08:003 beds planted today!I am happy that I was able to plant 3 beds today. The herb garden at the back door was first on my list. It is so convenient. I would really love to put some boxes outside my kitchen windows and remove the screen so I can just open the window and get what I need LOL. I know, that is SO lazy :) . But there isn't enough space. So at the back door will have to do.
I put in thyme, rosemary, cilantro, basil (holy & genovese), oregano, parsley, dill, and two more I can't remember LOL. I only have 9 squares in that bed.

The other two beds were filled with: spinach, rainbow carrots, jade bush beans, purple pole beans, green arrow peas, sugar snap peas, ithica lettuce, black seeded simpson lettuce, salad bowl lettuce, golden cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli (packman that I harvested the seeds off my own), walla walla onions, some unknown pkg of onions, brandywine tomatoes, early girl tomatoes, cukes, sugar baby watermelon, and herbs planted throughout some extra spaces.

It felt so good to be out in the garden again. I have missed it. I got so busy throughout the fall and winter, and all of the holidays and gatherings that go with it. Plus the garden wasn't producing so I was very frustrated. I thought I was going to be so on top of things last fall but apparently not! My mind was completely on Jake's diabetes diagnosis and it really took us a while to get into our new routine. However, I'm ready to take back the garden!!

Hope you all have a great weekend. I will continue to clean up the rest of the beds. I've got 8 more!Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-49322420129963242352010-01-28T13:11:00.000-08:002010-01-28T13:20:50.277-08:00I'm Still Alive!!Yes, I'm still here and alive. My garden - not so much. I have completely neglected it since Fall. Today was my first day out tackling the overgrowth of weeds. I spent 5 hours today topping off a few beds with some more compost and garden soil. I pulled weeds - yuk, hate that. I raked up mulch. And I carried twenty nine pavers, weighing 51 lbs each, about 75 feet, to create a nice little path through the garden. I could use about 20 more to get it the way I want it. These were free because my dad was getting rid of them. There's still about 5 or 6 more at their house I need to pick up. Then I figure I can buy one a month and have the path all like I want it by the end of the year. I still need to clean them but am very happy with the results so far. There will be much less weed growth with these things in place - they are huge and take up a lot of space.

On my way in I noticed a few things that survived the weeds and the freeze. I figured I'd grab a little radish for the bunny on the way in. Uh, yeah, this is little??

LOL. So I decided that was a bit big for the bunny to have. I gave him some of the leaves though. He tasted them a few times then determined they were worth eating. He can be a little picky.

Tomorrow I will go out and do some more cleaning and hopefully have the garden back in production this coming week. Time to plant some seeds for spring harvest.
I need to check in on you all and see how things are going!Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-22263952915173852362009-10-09T07:04:00.000-07:002009-10-09T07:14:55.214-07:00Careless Gardener!
Ugh, posted this the other night and it errored out. I really don't like having to rewrite everything! LOL.

Ok, so when I was checking my squash I broke it off the vine! Oops. I brought it in anyway and cut it open. It was almost 4lbs. Looked pretty ripe. Maybe not as ripe as it could be, but definitely orange throughout. I baked it and put some butter and brown sugar on it (like I do with sweet potatoes), and YUM!! It was great. Then I baked the seeds with some olive oil and sea salt and all I can say is DOUBLE YUM. Waaaaaayyyy better than baked pumpkin seeds.

Then as I was looking through the peppers I broke a branch off that had peppers on it! They were way too little. I mean, I've eaten them pretty little so that I can at least eat what I've grown, but not these LOL.

I broke something else too, but can't remember what. We've been sick all week. I haven't been out to the garden in a few days and hope the squash bugs haven't killed everything. I finally just let them have their way. The squash plant is still growing out and growing more squash so I guess it is healthy and strong enough to withstand the bugs.

I planted more carrots and lettuce, but it just isn't sprouting! Very annoying. I'm going to start some indoors again and see what happens.

Anyway, sorry I haven't been around reading and commenting. Just so tired, but I think we've rounded the corner on this thing and are getting better.

Have a great day!

Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-81556914804134808912009-09-23T19:37:00.001-07:002009-09-23T19:40:13.061-07:00The Squash Bug Killer!
Oh goodness. I decided to QUIT GIVING UP on my war against the squash bugs. I went out this morning armed with my weapons of warfare.

Gloves for squishing

Scissors for cutting away the dead/shriveled stuff - and chopping any squash bugs if I saw them

& my secret weapon....

For sucking those little buggers right off the leaves! It was satisfying watching them swirl around in the hurricane inside since the bottom is see through. Then I dumped them out into a bucket of soapy water.

I found some surprise squash hiding behind all of the out of control vines and ground cover. Yep, I finally pulled that stuff out and now I can walk behind those beds again. There was a little bird perched on the stalk/vine of one of the squash leaves. I thought to myself...I hope it eats some squash bugs! Well he hopped up the vine and started tilting his head this way and that, then he attacked and I saw a green worm go down that beak!! That bird is my new best friend!! LOL. He hopped from leaf to leaf, but I couldn't see what else he was catching. I ran in and grabbed the camera for a pic. It sounded hollow, it was dull colored, it's vine was yellow with browning wilting leaves... it was all white inside except for a few hints of blush. So I yanked the rest of the vines out and we'll start over.
The zucchini was just getting nasty so it got ripped out too. Those things take up way too much space. I'd rather have my bush beans in that box than one big ol' zucc.
Then I wandered over to the squash. I have given up on the battle with the squash bugs. I'm so tired of them. I eyed the squash menacingly and debated pulling it out. But there's actually 2 decent sized squash on them. Still...I'd rather have tomatoes for salsa and ketchup and salads than just 2 squash. So the squash in that box got a reprieve. But the one in the other box. Well it is over 20 feet long and going but it hasn't produced a pollinated squash yet. And I need space for tomatoes!!
Next year - no squash! :) Or maybe one that I plant NOT at a trellis and let it wander through the paths. I could do that.
Anyhow, mostly I neglected the garden this week. Rain, tired, busy, etc. I hope to plant a few things this weekend in my newly opened areas and replant some things that didn't take.
That's all. I missed out on a nap today and I'm dragging, so have a great weekend! zzzzzzzzzzzCrystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-39318223480144520082009-09-07T18:51:00.000-07:002009-09-07T18:57:37.388-07:00Shut Up about the Watermelon already!!Ok. I can't stop talking about the watermelon. I am excited about the watermelon! Every day I check on the watermelon.
Sooooo.....
Last night at 9PM we measured the melon and it was 13 1/2" around at its widest part. This morning at 10AM we measured and it was 14 3/8"! Tonight at 9PM we measured and it was 14 3/4"! It grew over an inch in 24 hours.
Ok, we're too obsessed with the melon. Step away from the melon...
But it is just so fun with things actually growing this year! Plus it is in Jake's box, and you're always happier when it is your kids' stuff that is having success!
I will try to refrain from even mentioning the melon the rest of the week.Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-249309502490111974.post-36134049890623613622009-09-05T09:47:00.000-07:002009-09-05T10:06:08.033-07:00Rain = Crazy GrowthI popped out real quick to check the garden this morning. Wow! Jake's watermelon is just growing like crazy. Yesterday it could sit in my palm, today I had to cup it to hold it there. Here's a pic from today.

And this squash, looks like it got pollinated! It must have doubled in size overnight, maybe more than doubled. This is the same squash as the last pic in yesterday's post.

So, I'm very excited about this season's potential. Last year I didn't have much success during fall planting, although winter did pretty well. I'm certain it was lack of enough good compost. I had the right ratio's down for Mel's mix, but I think I really needed more compost.

At this point I have the original 3 part mix in the box under 6" (i have 12" deep) of the aged horse manure. I'd love to get some other types in there next time I fill. I filled these things to the brim with the horse stuff and they've already dropped about 2" below the board. I toss bunny poo on top every week when I clean the bunny cage. We have a few worm bins going that I use, but neither of those puts out in the amount needed for all of the beds. Okay, so the bunny tries and does a really good job LOL!

We've also had more rain this year, so that is good. I have to remember that I'll need to water when it stops. I did the same thing last year. The sky had been watering the garden for me every afternoon that I just forgot watering had to be done when the rain season left LOL.

Anyhow, like I said. I'm just very excited about what the possibilites are this year. Now, I really need to go out and squish a few squash bugs I saw while taking pics. I didn't have gloves, and don't have EG's bug bravery LOL.

Crystabelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00595697774152696354noreply@blogger.com2
